This article is written due to a request of my friend via twitter.
VidiScript is a free PHP script that clones features of YouTube. Which means you can setup your own Video sharing site!
VidiScript – It’s 100% Free
Packed with features you can only find on major media sharing communities such as YouTube and LiveVideo, VidiScript is the most powerful FREE media sharing community script available online today.
You can see it in action via Demo 1, and Demo 2.
Since VidiScript is YouTube clone script. You will need to have a bit advanced system requirements as described below.
- Linux Web Server running Apache
- MySQL 4.x or higher
- PHP 4.3 or higher
- GD Library 2
- cURL
- IonCube loaders
- .htaccess and URL rewrites enabled
- FFmpeg
- FFmpeg-PHP
- MEncoder and Mplayer
- LAME
And some PHP configurations.
- safe_mode = off
- max_execution_time = 1000
- max_input_time = 1000
- open_basedir = (no value)
- upload_max_filesize = 200M
- post_max_size = 200M
- register_argc_argv = On
Seems a lot of works huh?
Anyway, let assume that you have all system requirements above. Now we will proceed with VidiScript installation…
- Download VidiScript from their download page. (It’s v0.42 at the time I’m witting this).
- Upload the folder “Full Install” to your webserver.
- Point your web browser to http://domain.tld/install/
- chmod 777 following files and folder
data
data/keys
data/scroller/scroller.xml
uploads
uploads/thumbs
uploads/avatars
uploads/ads
uploads/groupicons
includes/settings.inc
includes/badwords.inc - The installation screen should be shown up similar the below. Don’t be worried if your ffmpeg and MEncoder are different, you can change it later.
- Step 2 you need to fill in your database name, username, password and host name –usually ‘localhost’ (without quote, for sure
)
- This step is pretty easy, just put in your site name, site folder, admin username and password along with email address. Hit Next (last) step.
- If everything is okay, you will see the screen below..
And here is your fresh VidiScript installation..
Conclusion
The difficult part of installing VidiScript is ffmpeg. You need to have ffmpeg installed on your webserver. If you have shared host you might have difficult time since most shared hosting has provide no support for this feature. At least, VPS or Dedicated hosting is the most suggested in this case.

What did you put in the hostname? Normally it should be “localhost” or you can try putting you IP address it may work.

I can’t understand step nr 4. How can i change the filles. How to change them. Where should i enter…. Please help
Hi Garet,
On step 4, you will need to change the file permission via a FTP client. I would suggest FileZilla for that. You can find more about FileZilla on their website http://filezilla-project.org/
